Biology of Blepyrus clavicornis (Compere) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), a parasitoid of Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Silva,Vitor Pacheco da; Garcia,Mauro; Botton,Marcos.
Abstract Encyrtids (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) are the most important and diverse group of natural enemies of mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae). Blepyrus clavicornis (Compere) is the most common parasitoid associated with Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret) in the Serra Gaúcha region, Brazil. We conducted laboratory studies to assess the development time, sex ratio, adult longevity, host stage selection for parasitism, and effect of food on the longevity of adult females of B. clavicornis. The experiments were conducted in a climate chamber at 25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 10% RH and 12:12 L:D photoperiod. The solitary parasitoid B. clavicornis parasitized third-instar and adult female stages of P. viburni. The development time was more than 30 days (31.75 ± 0.38 for...

De reuzenertswesp Leucospis dorsigera nieuw voor Nederland (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) Naturalis
Heerden, A. van.

Diversity of parasitoid wasps in conventional and organic guarana (Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis) cultivation areas in the Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
SCHOENINGER,Karine; SOUZA,Jorge L.P.; KRUG,Cristiane; OLIVEIRA,Marcio L..
ABSTRACT We surveyed parasitoid wasps (Hymenoptera) in two guarana plantations in the central Brazilian Amazon (one conventionally, and one organically managed), as well as in adjacent forest and edge areas between crop and forest. We evaluated differences between management systems in parasitoid diversity and abundance, and assessed the importance of the surrounding matrix as a source of parasitoid wasps for guarana cultivation. Parasitoid wasp richness, abundance and taxonomic composition (at family level) were compared between plantations, and among habitats within plantations. Wasps were sampled using Malaise and Moericke traps. A total of 25,951 parasitoid wasps (10,828 in the conventional, and 15,123 in the organic crop area) were collected, and were...

In memoriam Prof. Dr J.T. Wiebes (1931-1999), evolutionary biologist and systematic entomologist Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Achterberg, C. van.
Born on 13 September 1931 in Rotterdam, Jacobus Theodorus [Koos] Wiebes read biology at Leiden University where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1963 on studies of Indo-Australian fig wasps. He started working on spiders (Lycosidae, Pisauridae) and beetles (Carabidae, Cetoniidae, Helodidae), but he earned his scientific reputation as a specialist in fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Agaonidae, Torymidae), their parasitoids and intricate host relationships (1961-1994: 89 papers). He served for many years on the staff of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (1955-1970, initially as assistant, later as curator of Coleoptera and as assistant director since 1965), to return as director of the newly merged national zoology and geology museums (ad interim 1982-1984,...

New species of Krombeinius (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Perilampidae) from Indonesia, and the first description of first-instar larva for the genus Naturalis
Darling, D.C..
Two new species of Krombeinius from Indonesia are described and illustrated, K. kubah from Java and K. dictyon from Sulawesi. In addition, K. eumenidarum Bouček and K. megalaspis (Cameron) are redescribed to allow comparison with the closely related species, K. dictyon and K. kubah, respectively. The first-instar larva of K. kubah is described from an aculeate wasp cocoon associated with the holotype and these planidia are compared with those known for Perilampidae and Eucharitidae. The new species are accommodated in the key to species and phylogenetic analysis of the genus presented in Darling (1988) and the biogeographic implications of the phylogeny are discussed.
